How Do I Become a “Ham”

Ham (Amateur) radio operators are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under rules Part 97. There are currently 4 active license levels for ham radio operators, Technician, General, Advanced and, the highest, Extra, Each level beginning with technician adds operating privileges and more radio band spectrum to work. Each level is achieved through extensive testing conducted under the auspices of the FCC. The entry level or Technicians license gives substantial operating privileges and the test for this class are definitely achievable with some study. For the higher classes the tests are more rigorous but also achievable with study.

LVARC has recently started testing for all levels of ham radio operator’s license with our first test session having taken place on September 30th, 2018 and quarterly thereafter. Test sessions are scheduled for 1:00 PM on Sunday. There is no charge for the test. We do ask that you obtain an FRN number from the FCC before you come to the testing session as this will speed up the registration process. The website to get an FRN number can be found here.

Please Check back to this page and check out the Laurel VEC page for details on the next test session.
